Presentation Description:
Third Stream music is the marriage of classical form and instrumentation with jazz language and sensibilities. Coined in 1961 by Gunther Schuller, the term describes a genre located halfway between jazz and classical music.
In this session, we will explore historical examples from the 1960s and 70s as well as contemporary solo and chamber music, including works by David N. Baker, David Canfield, Chick Corea, Nikolai Kapustin, and Amy Stephens. We will also discuss helpful tools to equip students who want to join school jazz bands or improvisatory ensembles, and how Third Stream works can make excellent CM 20th-21st century choices.
